Conservatives Condemn Labour's Callous Winter Fuel Allowance Cut: Impact on Barnet’s 56,104 Pensioners
Barnet, 31st July 2024 — The Conservative Party in Barnet strongly condemns the Labour government's decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance, potentially affecting 56,104 local pensioners, many of whom do not receive additional benefits. Barnet is also home to some 3,480 nonagenarians (90-99 year olds) more than most London boroughs.
The Winter Fuel Allowance has been crucial for helping Barnet pensioners afford heating during winter. Labour's cuts will impose significant financial strain, heighten health risks, and plunge elderly residents into energy poverty.
Cllr Peter Zinkin, Barnet Conservative leader, stated, "Labour's cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance is a heartless move that will leave our pensioners out in the cold. We urge the government to reverse this decision and restore essential support."
The Conservatives call for immediate action to counteract this damaging policy and are committed to protecting Barnet’s pensioners.
